![]() ![]() Yet with the release of the Nintendo Switch in March 2017, it feels like Nintendo finally found a way to get their original point across. Despite having a catalogue of quality exclusives, the console was cumbersome and failed to meet the lofty expectations it was teasing. The levels are both cute and detailed, with pleasing effects and ingenious level-design.Ĭaptain Toad: Treasure Tracker may be a title that’s aimed at a younger audience, but witty puzzles, clever level design and a bright colour scheme mean that any Switch owner can, and should, enjoy this puzzler.Ever since the bold experiment that was the Wii U, Nintendo has been in recovery mode. ![]() However, Captain Toad still captures the eye no matter your preferred mode with its stunning visual design. When the Switch is moved to handheld mode there’s a drop to 720p and, slightly disappointingly, the odd framerate issue as well. In docked mode the game runs at a crisp 1080p, breathing new life into the colourful environments and characters. Pixel Toad is often hidden in the most devious of places and locating him is never straightforward, but almost always immense fun. Whilst this sounds easy, it’s anything but. ![]() It’s then your job to find and simply touch Pixel Toad to complete the challenge. Selecting this option before diving into a world hides a tiny, 2D pixelated Toad somewhere in the level. Ultimately, it’s all too easy for this mode to get annoyingly awkward.Ĭaptain Toad: Treasure Tracker (Nintendo Switch)Īnother extra is Pixel Toad mode. Whilst an interesting concept this new set up can be tricky to grow accustomed to and, for any chance of fluid gameplay, there needs to be a strong line of communication. There is now two player support where a second player can join the game using one of the two joy-cons to shoot enemies and turn the camera for the first player who still has control over Toad or Toadette. The Switch port has left core gameplay aspects untouched but boasts slightly altered specifications which make Captain Toad a brighter, more interactive game. Most collectables can be spotted during the initial assessment of the level.Īlthough the singular objective of each world is to collect the glowing star, players can also collect a trio of gems which unlock later levels in the game and unique bonuses in every level allow for immense replayability. There are also enemy-bashing hammers as well as that Mario universe staple, power-up mushrooms. ![]() Plucking certain plants reveals turnips which can be used as a throwable item to knock out the various foes in each level. Hidden in the shrubbery, these items often give Toad the upper hand. Because of the setting, the world and its enemies are reassuringly familiar, yet Captain Toad will have to overcome the familiar enemies with new items. Levels include locations straight out of Super Mario 3D World and Super Mario Odyssey. And this keeps things feeling fresh as well. Luckily the levels are hugely diverse and there is always a new challenge to help you forget the frustrations of the last one.Ĭaptain Toad will traverse worlds inspired by the best locations in the Mario series as well as showcasing fantastic original new worlds. However, some of these interactive forms work better in certain Switch modes than others.įor example, turning wheels is a synch with the touchscreen in handheld mode, but bizarrely frustrating when utilising motion controls with the Switch in docked mode. Puzzles come in an array of colourful variants, and players will have to turn wheels, manipulate moving platforms and use cherries to double or even triple the amount of Toads on screen to solve them.Īll this in the name of uncovering the diamonds and stars ingeniously hidden in each level. Without the ability to jump players must utilise the camera to twist the environment around, unveiling secrets and shortcuts that you can guide Captain Toad through with the analogue stick. Players control Toad or Toadette as they solve puzzles and progress through a storybook world composed of small isolated stages.Įach stage presents a series of challenges and enemies for Captain Toad to solve and overcome. Operating as a sandbox mystery puzzler, Captain Toad is a witty take on the 3D platforming genre. And for those who did play the Wii U version, this game is much more than a lazy, identical port. Originally released in 2014 on the Wii U, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker has finally made its way onto the Nintendo Switch.Īlthough four years old the relative obscurity of the Wii U means that plenty of gamers missed Captain Toad in its original form.
